2005 July – Family Update

Another busy term, making final arrangements for the 2005 ski trip and our family holiday to Queensland. Liam continues to progress really well at school and is reading a massive number of books. I am really pleased with the way he can sound out words to determine what they are. He also enjoys reading, with a little encouragement.

Liam made tremendous progress with his skiing this year, he can now confidently go down simple blue runs, take little jumps, zig-zag between trees and go up the side of banks (all the things typical of new skiers, especially boys).

Liam and Tom got on well during the trip, challenging each other to ski faster and better. Liam also looked forward to the end of each day so that they could have great snow fights.

Liam and Tom both enjoyed skiing down Wombats Ramble and by the end of the week were racing down as fast as Bruce would normally take Liam between his legs. Bruce struggled a little this year, since he had a damaged ankle (since Xmas) which was swelled up.

The poor visibility during the middle of the week only exacerbated the problem and it wasn’t until the final day that Bruce started skiing properly.

Rosie made good progress this year. She has perfected simple slide turns and is working on parallel turns. She needs to work on getting more weight transfer through her turns so that she can get through them quickly, this will enable her to cope with the steeper slopes.

This year we decided to extend our stay over East after the ski trip. We travelled up to Brisbane and then took Liam to Movie World again. He was really good this time, trying all the rides that he could. This year he was tall enough to go on the Scooby Doo ride, which he found a bit scary but once it started into the roller coaster part he loved it. Bruce had to take him on this, much to my hatred. Rosie wasn’t feeling too well.

After Movie World, we immediately flew up to Yeppoon for a few nights at the Capricorn Resort again. We like this resort since it has a kids club for Liam, which allow us to go out and play golf each morning. Liam quite enjoys the kids club.

We had the big golf tournement this year off the stick. Rosie has been playing consistently and has got her handicap down whereas Bruce hasn’t played much and struggles to play to his handicap. Rosie won the first game and Bruce won the second game. The weather was good on Monday, but the next few days don’t sound good, it was cold and winding today.

In the end, Bruce won convincingly since he had better course sense and was male. Each day, while we were out at golf, Liam was at day care which he thoroughly enjoyed again. This is the best part about the resort and we will have to look for something similar next time, only warmer.

Apart from golf, the scenery was quite good, with bush turkeys and brolgas strolling past all the time. We also played a bit of lawn bowls with Liam and went swimming in the freezing cold pool.

Mum and Dad looked after the business for us again which was great and they took some good bookings which helped to pay for our holiday.

The flight home was good and we were back into our life in Margaret River in no time at all.
